Did you know logistics outsourcing and dating share some key characteristics? It might sound strange, but there are surprising parallels between the two.
In this video, I’ll explain what makes them similar and why understanding this connection can be insightful.
Watch below to see my perspective on this!
Outsourcing logistics is similar to dating—it’s all about finding the right long-term partner. After 25 years of experience helping businesses with logistics outsourcing, I’ve seen companies struggle and even fail at selecting the right 3PL (third-party logistics) partner.
Here’s a quick guide with key tips to help you find the best match.
Be an Attractive Partner, Not Needy
Just like in a relationship, being too needy can make you less appealing. While some requirements, such as strict compliance with regulations, are essential, being overly demanding in other areas can create friction. If you’re constantly checking in for updates, requesting unnecessary reports, or micromanaging, it can strain the relationship. Instead, aim to be easy to work with—set clear expectations, but trust your 3PL to handle the logistics once they’re in place.
Data is the Foundation of Success
The more accurate and detailed the data you provide, the easier it is for a 3PL to assess your needs and give you an accurate proposal. Make sure you provide product information such as dimensions, weights, and handling requirements, along with demand history and delivery details. Transparency is crucial; hiding problems like high return rates or hidden product characteristics will only cause issues down the road. Clear and honest data makes you a more attractive partner to 3PLs and helps them deliver better results.
Consider Your Contract Size
The size of your logistics contract affects which 3PLs will be interested in working with you. Larger 3PLs often won’t consider contracts under $5 million, so smaller companies may need to focus on second- or third-tier providers. If your contract is small—say $200,000—consider if outsourcing is the best option. Smaller contracts might attract fewer 3PLs, and managing logistics in-house could be a better choice in these cases.
When outsourcing logistics, think long-term. Be a trustworthy partner with solid data, clear expectations, and realistic demands. By finding the right 3PL partner, you’ll set the foundation for a successful, long-term relationship.
